How do I tell which Catalyst 4506 chassis I have, I need to upgrade it, and only have remote access. show version etc., doesn't show whether it is an E type or not.

A "show inventory" should supply the needed info.

Dan, I have tried that and
it doesn't show the chassis as a Cat4506-E, on a swi
tch I believe to be an E type switch

The "show inventory" will show:
------------------ show inventory ------------------ NAME: "Switch System", DESCR: "Cisco Systems, Inc. WS-C4506-E 6 slot switch " PID: WS-C4506-E , VID: V02, SN: Or------------------ show inventory ------------------ NAME: "Switch System", DESCR: "Cisco Systems, Inc. WS-C4506 6 slot switch " PID: WS-C4506 , VID: V07, SN: If it doesn't show as WS-C4506-E, then it's not, or you've located a DDTS.
If you think it is an E chassis, I would recommend a TAC case to sort it out.
