How do you recover DVR 9865 stored file?

I have a Cisco 9865 cable box with DVR capabilities.  They do not provide support and nor does Cable Company.

The unit will not connect with the cable company to provide validation anymore (a new box has no problem).  Since it won't connect, we can't access the stored programs (ie high school football games) we would like to save.  Inside the cable box is a 1TB SATA drive.  Has anybody tried connecting this Sata drive to a windows or Linux box or even tried installing it into a functioning cable box? Or can anyone recommend a means to pull them off the drive.....

can't you just open the box and use a SATA-to-USB cable (such as the one in the link below) to get the files to a connected Windows machine ?
