First of all thanks to all, I'm adding a new access switch to my 6509 catalyst, I have to do this during business hours, how do I prevent this new switch from starting a root election and disturbing the rest of the network? thanks again

Hello,
you can use the root guard feature to prevent any new switch to become root:
"Spanning Tree Protocol Root Guard Enhancement"
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk389/tk621/technologies_tech_note09186a00800ae96b.shtml
In addition make sure you do not run into VTP issues (like deleting all VLANs) following f.e. this guideline:
"Adding a VTP Client Switch to a VTP Domain"
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801cdeea.html#1223658
Hope this helps!
Regards, Martin
