how to reset a pix 501

Hi Carl,
Use "configure factory-default" command once you are in enable mode.

What if I do not have the password for this device ? how do I reset then, is there a rommon mode ?

Yes, Carl there is a rommon mode called as monitor mode. Reboot the pix and press esccape key, you will fall in the monitor mode. But I am not sure that you can set the pix on factory-default while in monitor mode.
You can do a password recovery on PIX and then set it up on the factory-default if you want. Please check the link below for password recovery.
