hi,
Is there any entry to shutdown a specific module in Cat 6500.
hw-module module # reset - reloads the module.

Hello New,
for a linecard I used
conf t
no power enable module x
this powers off the slot
But I'm not sure it can be used also with a service module without problems.
Hope to help

Hi,
To add to the previous post...
You can shut down the Service Modules by using the below command
Native IOS
"hw-module module x shutdown" for services modules
CatOS
"set module shutdown"

Arul

Arul,
If shut down an FWSM, can I remove the module from the 6500 while it is still in production, without impacting the switch functions?
Also, if I put the FWSM module back, do I have to reconfifgure the module?
Thanks.

Arul is correct and in fact if the command is available to shut the service module you should do so before removing the module or reloading the switch.
Not all service modules need shutting down. Basically if you type
hw-module module
the CLI will only give you the further option of "shutdown" if the service module supports it eg.
An FWSM does support shutdown so you would get the option in the above command
A CSM does not support shutdown so you would only get the option to reload.

Hi Jon,
Why it is necessary to shutdown the service module before reloading the switch? Anyways as the switch comes up the FWSM could also come up. I have also seen people doing it to shut the FWSM before reloading the 6500 switch.

Push the "Shutdown button".
