i had designed the network using HSRP...for hardware redunduncy
my configuration is below
r1
l3_1 l3_2
l2
host_1 host_2
On L3_1
int fa0/0
ip add 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
standby 1 ip 192.168.1.10
standby 1 preempt
standby 1 priority 105
standby 2 ip 192.168.1.20
standby 2 preempt
On
int fa0/0
ip add 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0
standby 1 ip 192.168.1.10
standby 1 preempt
standby 2 ip 192.168.1.20
standby 2 priority 105
standby 2 preempt
Problem:
with above configuration when L3_1 switch fails L3_2 swich takes over L3_1 for group 1 but when L3_1 comes up after failing it doesn't takes over L3_2 due to high priority.
pl. suggest the solution.

correct...
it is working for case 1)
but for 2nd case i have configured l3_1 .....
configuration....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
track 1 interface FastEthernet0/0 line-protocol
!
!
!
!
interface FastEthernet0/0
ip address 172.16.1.2 255.255.255.0
duplex auto
speed auto
!
interface FastEthernet0/1
ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
duplex auto
speed auto
standby 1 ip 192.168.1.10
standby 1 priority 105
standby 1 preempt
standby 1 track 1 decrement 6
standby 2 ip 192.168.1.20
standby 2 preempt
!
-------------------------------------------------------------
but with this configuration case 2) does't works....
when i am disconnecting the L3_1 switch's cable to router L3_2 gets active but after the link get active it still not working ......
05-25-2012 03:19 AM
I'm not sure why L3_1 is not taking over as active when the link b/w L3_1 and router comes up.
Do you have the privilage of enabling debug commands?
if so, can you please enable "debug standby terse" on both L3_1 and L3_2 and send across the log ?
Thanks,
-Vijay

when i am disconnecting the l3 from router, l3 output of "sh ip int brief" still mentios line protocol is up, i think it is not decreasing the priority after disconnecting the link... (somewhat related to line protocol).....

Hi,...
whatever configuration done are correct na....?
can i use router instead of l3 switch..?
05-25-2012 05:27 AM
Hi Jigar
I'm little confused if the tracking is working or not?
*Mar 1 03:36:26.115: HSRP: Fa0/1 Grp 1 Hello out 192.168.1.1 Active pri 105 vIP 192.168.1.10

The above debug messages after fail shows that for group 1, 192.168.1.1 (L3_1) is still sending out the hellp packets with the priority of 105 but that is not true if the track command has worked.
if the track command had worked, the priority should have been decreased to 99
can you share the output of sh standby on L3_1 after you shut down the connection towards the router?
Thanks,
-Vijay

Hi Jigar,
This works as expected now. once you bring up the interface towards Router, the L3_1 has taken over the "ACTIVE" role for group 1.
I hope this is what you expected right?

From the output above, looks like the link does not go down when the cable is unplugged.
because L3_2 hasn't taken over as "ACTIVE" from the output below as the state is still standby, Priority of Active is still 105
FastEthernet0/1 - Group 1
State is Standby
16 state changes, last state change 00:14:36
Virtual IP address is 192.168.1.10
Active virtual MAC address is 0000.0c07.ac01
Local virtual MAC address is 0000.0c07.ac01 (v1 default)
Hello time 3 sec, hold time 10 sec
Next hello sent in 2.744 secs
Preemption enabled
Active router is 192.168.1.1, priority 105 (expires in 8.904 sec)
Standby router is local
Priority 100 (default 100)
IP redundancy name is "hsrp-Fa0/1-1" (default)
Can you share the output of "show standby" on active when the cable is unplugged?
Thanks,
-Vijay
