If you have tried - still not working as mentioned in the document, to assists better :

1. turn off the device

2. Connect console cable, ( start logging all the information on the console - the one you are following)

3. Turn on the device, do the procedure mentioned in the above-suggested URL

when it come to end, you think not working, then post here a complete log to understand why this was not working.

See what you get when you press the button and when to release :

Yes I've tried  I can't seem to get this part to work either Maybe I shouldn't be messing around with cisco switches I just wanted this to be easy to set up but this type of stuff is beyond my knowledge

Okay, I got it to do something I'm just now lost on if I can just replace the config.text with a new config.text with my info and not having to copy from the old config file?

If the config is not matter yes you can do that way, some people want to preserve the config only to change the password.

you did not release the mode button at the right moment

here is a snippet from the mentioned password recovery procedure:

You need to wait between 30-40 seconds or if watching the console until the text USB Console INIT appears, let go of the mode button when you see this and it will then drop you into the switch: prompt
