IE 2000 16PTC-GE IOS 15.2.4-EA1 Boot loop

howdy,

i have witnessed, put in a ticket to resolve, had several RMA's over the 15.2.4 EA1 .bin ios for the IE2000 16PTC-GE switch going into a boot loop, never to return unless you go into rommon mode and load the old ios. here is what this looks like.

Cisco could not tell me how this is possible. thier techs could not re create the issue.

i have :

1. loaded a new clean version of the ios

2. tried using the .tar

3. had several RMA;s done, all with the same results

4. put in a ticket and closed it because of the above 3.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening with this particular IOS?

I do have my switches up, but with the previous IOS.

I don't use this particular model but it looks like a poorly written code.

Hey Network Manager,

I had this same exact problem but mine was on a Stratix 5700 Rockwell switch. Total Cisco IOS through and through. I have version s5700-universalk9-mz.152-5.EA.bin. I tried to do an upgrade to 15.5 which appeared to be ok but then kept looping. Here's what I did to fix mine, not sure if this will help. I took the SD card from my lab switch(same model) and booted from it. Through boot up I then got this weird message that it was "Upgrading Jeeves FGPA firmware. It went through a few checks and verifications and it finally booted correctly. I am researching exactly what this FPGA is but at a online glance I did find a few Cisco bug articles about IE switches and FPGA. Hope this helps or at least leads you in the right direction. Good luck.

This happened to me going from code 15.0.2-EA1 to 15.2.4-EA5.  I saw that the jeevesfpga.rbf was withing the .tar file, so downloaded the .tar onto sdflash and extracted it onto sdflash and changed the boot statement to boot system sdflash:iosfilename/iosfilename.bin and reloaded the device.  Note: Even when all these files were on flash with the boot statement point to flash, it didn't work.  Below is what occured after I did this and then the switch came up fine on the new firmware.

This worked for me as well with the exact same problem. Thanks.

I am having this exact issue and i have tried it all. still stuck on boot loop.

As long as the boot statement is correct and you have downloaded the .tar file onto sdflash and extracted the .tar file onto sdflash and their is indeed an sdflash card there it should come up fine.  Below is a shot of the directory on mine.  I did have to press and hold the express setup button for 10 seconds in order to bootup on the old firmware and ensure the boot statement was correct.

I had this problem as well, upgrading from 15.0.2 to 15.2.4EA5.

There is a bug in the Cisco code which prevents you upgrading via SD card. It's in threads elsewhere but is pretty useless and just tells you to not use the SD card to upgrade as a workaround.

The only solution for me was to boot via the old 15.0.2 image, and then upgrade using the following:

archive download-sw /overwrite /force-reload tftp://x.x.x.x/ie2000-universalk9-tar.152-4.EA5.tar

This would download the tar file to the switch, extract it and then reboot. I would ensure there is no SD card whilst doing the upgrade to prevent the bootup procedure checking elsewhere.

I've successfully upgraded 12 switches via this method.

Note: If you are stuck in rommon, you can use an SD card to boot into your old image in order to give you access to the archive command. Otherwise your only choice would be to use XModem.
