Hi folks,

i just recently upgraded my IOS version from 16.3.5b to 16.6.8. This is upgrading IOS on install mode

The only thing I’m unsure on is how critical the boot variable is:

Set Boot Variable

Step 4

Jeromesky1_0-1615818422161.png

Use the boot system flash:packages.conf command to set the boot variable.

Switch(config)# boot system flash:packages.conf

Switch(config)# exit

Use the write memory command to save boot settings.

Switch# write memory

Use this command to verify BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf

Switch# show boot system

We’ve rebooted a 2nd time as when I do a ‘show boot’ command it tells me at next boot it will update but a 2nd reboot didn’t.

Switch#sh boot

---------------------------

Switch 1

---------------------------

Current Boot Variables:

BOOT variable does not exist

Boot Variables on next reload:

BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf

Manual Boot = no

Enable Break = no

Boot Mode = DEVICE

iPXE Timeout = 0

The switch was upgraded to 16.6.8 is install mode, just unsure what this component and if it is essential

Hi,

I understand. You are concern about this:

BOOT variable does not exist

And I know you only have one switch and not a stack but every switch has a number. In this case, it is switch 1. So maybe try this:

boot system switch 1 flash:packages.conf

and test again.

Hi,

Try this:

boot system switch all flash:packages.conf

after reboot, you should see this in show boot output:

BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf;

HTH

Hi Reza,

As seen on the output shown BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf

What we are concern about is the below still not updating after the second reboot that the BOOT variable does not exist and it is still showing Boot Variables on next reload:

BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf

Current Boot Variables:

BOOT variable does not exist

Boot Variables on next reload:

In addition this is only a single switch we are upgrading not a stack of 3850 switches.

Thanks
