I need to install a 48-port 10/100/1000 line card into a 6506E. Can this be done whilst the switch is up?
The hardware installation guide doesn't indicate either way.

Last time I checked - yes - they are hot swappable.

Hello Gary,
the answer is yes you can insert the linecard without powering off the switch.
Look for OIR capable parts
this is the acronym used by Cisco for on line insertion and removal

I would prefer to shutdown the module prior to removal -
However the commands
#hw-module module X shutdown - doesnt work for me - I dont have a shutdown option
also the
#no power enable module X - doesnt work for supcards (%Error: no power control on supervisor cards)
Do I need to upgrade my software to enable this feature -
running on s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SXI2a.bin
