How do I assign the loopback interface to a vlan other than vlan1? I can do it with a CatOS device for the SC0 but is that functionality available in a 6500 running IOS 12.2?

Just create a new VLAN interface, e.g. int vlan 64, and give it an IP address. That will do the same things as the VLAN 1 interface, but on VLAN 64.

A loopback interface doesn't need to be associated with a VLAN, it is simply a software-only interface. If you are talking about managing the 6500 running IOS then you can manage it on any interface, although a loopback is preferable since it never goes down (unless deleted etc).

one benefit of a loopback interface is that it wont belong to one vlan. you can reach it from each vlan you have

Thank you for reminding me that the loopback interface is not the same as a SC0 interface on a CatOS switch. I have to readjust my view of the IOS layer2/3 switches.
