Have you not got a Cisco login? You can use their software advisor. That will tell you exactly what you need.
Also you could issu a #show module and post that information.

From what I can see for a 6509-e with sup720-10g the latest IOS is:
12.2.33SXI5(ED) so it's not a GD.
This is for the virtual switching supervidor engine 720 with 10ge uplinks.
i.e. if you want VSS you need to upgrade the supervisor. I mean it's not really an IOS thing. To use VSS you need the right card to begin with.
OR iin other words updating your current IOS won't make is VSS compatible. You need the new (and expensive) supervisor. Talk with your Cisco dealer cos they sometimes do 'buy-back' so you can get it cheaper.
You can see that your card doesn't suppoer VSS here:
Hope that is the information you wanted.

Ian

Hi
What the GD Means
12.2.33SXI5(ED) so it's not a GD.

ED = Early deployment i.e. it could still have some bugs or as Cisco like to call it now 'caveats'.
GD = General Deployment i.e. it 'should' be a bug free release.

Ian
