Hi,
Can someone tell me if PIM routing over GRE tunnel is officially supported on 45xx models (4500E or 4500X) ?
In "feature search", I can only find 6K and 7K supporting this feature...
Thanks.
Best regards,
Romain

Hi Romain,
Regarding plain Catalyst 4500, the GRE and multicast over GRE seems to be supported in software - this might be a problem depending on the volume of the multicast traffic to be carried across the GRE tunnel:
With Catalyst 4500E, the sparse information I was able to find out suggests that the GRE itself is supported - again in software - and I would suppose that the multicast over GRE would be available in the similar way as on 4500 series.
The Catalyst 4500-X appears to support GRE in hardware which should also include running multicast over the GRE tunnel:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst4500/release/note/ol-37xe-4500x.html
Every information should be considered as my best effort - unfortunately, I do not have first hand experience with these platforms and I cannot guarantee that these conclusions are correct. I have, however, tried my best.
Best regards,
Peter

Thanks for this answear, it was what I had found too but there is no clear validation of PIM over GRE support (even if the support of each feature independantly should imply global support).
I was worried because in feature navigator (http://tools.cisco.com/ITDIT/CFN/jsp/by-feature-technology.jsp), "IPv4 multicast over pt to pt GRE" does not show 45xx series.
Best regards,
Romain
