Issue: the switch is rebooting continuously

frbachel05

Level 1

Hi everybody,

I have a trouble with a switch (switch 1 master of  3 switchs in one stack)  that is rebooting continuously when i connect a machine on it.

Historic:

I rebooted the stack because of electric cut.

After startup completed, the switch 1 master rebooted again and again

I turned off the switch 1 and I downgraded the priority level

I powered on the swtich and it has been added to the stack with slave position.

If i don't connect PC on it, it's ok but as soon as i connect a PC, the switch is rebooting

When i connect or remove a PC on the switch, it reboot with logs below:

When I remove the switch of the stack , I have the same issue if I connect a PC.

I don't see warnings for hardware failure.

I have crash info but i don't know how to translate it?

Do you have any idea?

Reinstall the IOS?

Thanks in advance for your help

François

You've got multiple problems.  Here they are:

1.  Your switch is undergoing a crash-boot-loop.  The switch crashes then tries to create a crashinfo file.  For unknown reasons the flash is full so the switch can't write the crashinfo.  Because of this the switch "crashes" again, reboots and the cycle repeats itself.

2.  You are running 802.1X?  With a buggy IOS 12.2(52)SE.

That's it.

To solve your issue, you need to stop the crash-boot-loop.  In order for you to do this, you'll need to hold down the mode button while the switch is rebooting and go into ROMmon.

Hi Leo,

Thanks for your help.

I deleted files about crash info in the flash to free space and the switch can again write crashinfo.

But the swich is still rebooting...

All my switchs have the IOS version 12.2(52) SE and I didn't have any trouble before this reboot because of this electric cut.

Ok, this is the stack master, right?

Go back to ROMmon and delete all the config.

Hi,

No I downgraded the switch to member only

I deleted all the configs and the flash was empty.

I copied a new IOS to the flash in rommon mode with the command "copy xmodem flash:"...
I set boot flash with this IOS.

I configured basic configuration with one interface vlan and one port to make tests

But if i connect a port, the switch is rebooting continuously again ...

I think I need to open call at Cisco...

Thanks

Download the new image for your cisco Switch from the below link

https://software.cisco.com/download/home/268438038

Use Tera Term, to transfer flash image via Xmodem to cisco switch, download Tera Term tool  its free

Power on your switch while pressing the mode button you will get the ROMMON prompt (switch:)

setup the transfer speed at its high to transfer fast

switch: set BAUD 115200

also change the speed in tera term terminal to do so go to:

set up > serial port> then change the baud rate to 115200 there as well

Give the switch a minute  take into effect, don’t panic when you feel like the screen froze, that happens, if you feel you don't get prompt even after press mode button change this back to 9600 you will get prompt back. but as I said at 9600  it will take long time try to transfer on 115200

then type:

switch: flash_init

switch: copy xmodem: flash:<the image file>

the image file name means the file that you just downloaded kept on  desktop or any folder just copy and paste the name followed by .bin extension

when you hit enter after this command you will see CCCs displayed, then on tera term menu click File > XMODEM > send

browser the file on your desktop or the folder you you have downloaded  .bin file, That’s it! Here the transfer will begin

To verify if .bin files were copied you can type:

switch: dir flash:   and the .bin file should be there.

Depending on the link’s speed it may take up to 40minutes. Once everything is done. Do not forget to set the Baud rate back to 9200:

switch: set BAUD 9600  (if this command didn't accept just type unset Baud it will make it default)

You are almost there, last thing you need to do is type:

switch: boot flash:<.bin file name>

Why would anyone want to use XModem when a switch can boot off a USB flash drive is questionable.

Did you read the dump information where it said "FRNTE-E2-12-CS3750-01#"?  3750 = no usb port.
