Jumbo Frames - 9198 vs 9216

Hi Everyone.

I'm currently working towards a project with a client. They are asking for access switches that support Jumbo Frames at least of 9216 bytes. The product that fits the needs and also the budget is the Catalyst 9200. But I found out it only supports Jumbo frames up to 9198 bytes. And going up in the ladder of models, 9300, 9400 and even some 9500 only support 9198 bytes.

It looks like the access-distribution switches support 9198 and Core switches (upper 9500 and 9600) support 9216.

What is the reason for this??

Hi,

Not sure why but that has been traditionally the case with Cisco switches where the access and distro layer switches like 3560, 3750, 3850, etc.. can support up to 9198 and core switches like 6500, 6800 and not the 9500 support up to 9216. For simplicity, I would configure all at 9198.

Thanks for our answer Reza. Any advantages to have 9216 over 9198??, Any particular reason??

At the end if we configure everything at 9216 it's going to work just fine.

Hi,

Everything is going to work just fine with either 9216 or 9198. Just for ease of management and simplicity, I would configure one of them across the board.
