LAN base image is a superset of LAN lite image. Few of the lan base  features mainly PoE , RPS support, CWDM SFP support ( support for the above features are avaiable in lan base image only after a certain version)  are not available in LAN lite image. For detail feature comparison please refer to the below link to the feature navigator.

2960-S switches are new L2 switches which are stackable like our old 3750 switches.

i am looking at the software download page. For 2960-S lan base image is not available.

Q. What are the notable differences between the Cisco Catalyst 2960 LAN Base and LAN Lite switches?

A. Cisco Catalyst 2960 LAN Base switches have several advantages:

• Gigabit Ethernet connectivity in 8-, 24-, and 48-port configurations

• RPS support and support for a wide range of SFP transceivers

• Enhanced security through Layer 2-4 access control lists (ACLs), DHCP Snooping, and more extensive Network Admission Control capabilities such as Web authentication and 802.1x enhancements

• Additional QoS capabilities: The LAN Base IOS supports policing, class and policy maps, differentiated services code point (DSCP), AutoQoS, and configurable queue weights, buffers, and thresholds

• Higher network-level availability with features such as Flex Links and Link State Tracking  •

Increased number of VLANs (256) and other enhancements such as IPv6 Host, MLD Snooping, LLDP-MED, RSPAN, MVR, DHCP Option 82, and IP SLA (responder)

Q. Can I upgrade or downgrade a Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch between the LAN Base and LAN Lite IOS images?

A. No. Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series Switches cannot be upgraded from LAN Lite to LAN Base and cannot be downgraded from LAN Base to LAN Lite.  http://tools.cisco.com/squish/16852

The LAN Base image (9.7MB) is bigger than the LAN Lite (8MB) but it has the same DRAM and flash requirements

let's make it simple

Hi,

Related to my experience, one of the high-light differences is the number of VLANs supported ,in LAN-lite switches.

In 2960 24PC-s it is possible change the vtp mode client to transparent if it would not support the related numbers in VTP messages. Vlans 1-50 and 108-148 were defined in VTP server.

You may this logging message if you type "terminal monitor" in telnet connections.

"VLAN manager changing device mode client to TRANSPARENT"
