Hi,
Our office lan network is in 192.168.0.0/16 with 300 nodes and 30 server .Since its a large broadcast domain some times it takes large time for copying files. How can we avoid this problem with out changing the subnet. Also how to avoid broadcast storm.
we are using cisco 2950 series switch.
pls give me a better solution.....
Thanks

Hi Sihanu,
Hmm /16 as single broadcast domain...strange. You need to break down it to /24 as soon as possible for better performance.
However you can configure strom control like bwlo.
Switch# configure terminal
Switch(config)# interface gigabitethernet0/1
Switch(config-if)# storm-control broadcast level 20
Also can take look at the below two links for better understand.

The fact you have a large subnet (the /16), but with 330 hosts, does not necessarily mean your file copying performance is due to broadcast activity. For example, really poor file copy performance might be due to a duplex errors. Or, also for example, you might have all your 2950s in one long daisy chain topology. Some additional analysis is probably merited.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any issue if I enable storm control broadcat in all port of the switch. Also what is the best value of storm control broadcast level value???
This is my config
cisco1(config-if-range)#interface range gigabitEthernet 0/1-48
cisco1(config-if-range)#storm-control broadcast level 20
cisco1(config-if-range)#storm-control action shutdown
Thanks

Yes, there can be an issue since networks use broadcasts legitimately. Broadcast storm control shouldn't be considered a tuning option, but an option to preclude total network meltdown. For latter usage, the network might not work too well when storm control engages, but you might still be able to examine the network (in-band) and mitigate the issue.
Best value varies. Since broadcasts are legitimate, you might analyze your network to baseline what the broadcast volume is, then add some fudge factor. Hopefully, this will then only have storm control engage when something is amiss. Of course, you also then want to continuously monitor your network, as "routine" broadcast volume can change overtime if network usage changes.

Couple questions...
How large a file was or is it?
How long did it take to copy?
How did you copy this? Xcopy, drag and drop, cut and paste?
What this a copy or move?
What is the connection speeds for all the links to the spot you copied the file to?

Could you try a Move instead and see if it is quicker? I have found copying can sometimes take forever while a move is far quicker.
What is the operating system? XP, Vista, Apple?
Is the slowness only from certain PC's?
How many switches or routers does it have to pass through for source to destination?
Do you have any type of rate limiting configured?
What type of switch is the PC connected to?
Just trying to narrow things down.

What is the exact model number of the switch?
What OS is the two PCs running?

Are the windows XP and Windows 2003 server both connected to the same switch? If not could you perhaps attach a diagram showing those two machines and the devices between them?
Also, on each switchport perhaps do a "show interface
