I always hear that you cannot have a router act as a VTP server to propagate all your VLAN settings out to your switches. I have a Cisco 3550 Switch which is doing inter vlan routing. Can I set this to be in VTP server mode? Its a switch, yet its doing routing, so I'm not quite sure.

Sure you can, configuring VTP and Layer3 routing features on the same Layer3 switch is not an problem. You cannot configure VTP on a router like a 2800 or 2900 series.

Absolutely it can run as a VTP server.
Routers can not generally be a VTP server because routers have no need to propagate VLAN information and thus do not run the VTP protocol. A layer 3 switch on the other hand still runs layer 2 protocols such as VTP and as such, can be the VTP server in the domain.

The fact that the switch is doing intervlan routing does not matter - it can still act as a VTP server.
