Hi,
We are trying to help a client decide if layer 4-7 switching is a necessity in their environment. They stream unicast video to the internet upto 500Mb/s total. The switch platform however would be handling much more internal traffic in addition to RTSP and RTP, and the internal internet users compete for the same internet bandwidth as the streaming video clients.
What would layer 4-7 switching offer and/or improve in this environment. Thanks.

Hi,
I suppose the video streaming is part of their core business. Not knowing the details of their network, but with that large amount of traffic (500 Mbps) I'd keep it on a separate Internet connection - you don't want to drop the video traffic and probably need to work out some redundancy.
Use a separate Internet connection with separate firewall for the office Internet access.....

Yes, it's a good point, and they have not yet made such a change. Thanks.
