Hello Community - I have to add a 3rd 3850 switch but at this time I want stack it little differently, need community expert feedback... Let me know if I am missing.  Thanks in Advance!

Can I  just add with basic config like switch number /priority, vlans and matching version?

Can i have other two SWs running while I stack 3rd one?

Just so everyone is "on the same page", what do you mean "stack it little differently"?

just make sure Master switch (usually #1 and top one in stack) has sw number 1 and priority 15.  Make sure new switch has priority 1, while number should be 3 but it does not matter as  number will be assigned as next available number for new switch.  Nothing like vlans config or any other config should match; new switch will take config from master.

it is preferred to have matching version of IOS.  if you do not, you can set up existing switches to push IOS to new switch with auto software update (see Doc for bundle vs install mode). Must follow instructions here.

Adding or replace the switch follow high level steps still valid

Offline prepare the switch :

- New switch load same IOS and feature set as exiting stack members

- New switch change switch member number and priority  to the old switch member number and priority or new lower number of exiting last switch.

- save the config and power down new switch

bringing to Live

 - connect the cable new switch to Live stack via stack wise cabling and power new switch up

useful commands :

show switch  - will give once this is provisioning.

show switch stack-ports

show switch stack-ring speed
