Our network has crashed a few times within the last two days. Come to find out we have a amber.com switch uplinked via copper to it from cisco equipment.
The amber switch had a cable plugged from one port to another port on the switch.
Would this cause the network to go nutz?

It certainly could if spanning tree did not handle it correctly if for some reason you have spanning tree turned off . You would have to look to see if one of those ports is either shutdown or blocked for spanning tree . You could do a show spanning-tree blockedports" and see if it is blocked.
