magic number mismatch: bad mzip file - 3560

I was directed to this forum to see if somebody could assist in getting my 3560 back online.

Original thread: https://learningnetwork.cisco.com/message/243366#243366

When I try and boot the new image, or even the older image I get a 'magic number mismatch: bad mzip file.  I've tried 3 different IOS images.

I don't have a TAC account for this switch, as I use it in the lab for my studies.  I would hate to waste this switch.

Cheers,

Evan,

I am afraid that the attempt to upgrade your IOS resulted in uncovering some dormant FLASH memory error. If that happened then sadly, there is no workaround.

Before giving up all hope, have you tried formatting and fsck-ing the FLASH from the switch: bootloader prompt? Also, have you tried various software terminals to upload the IOS image via XMODEM to the switch? It is possible that the particular software you are using somehow corrupts the XMODEM during the upload. By the way, you have quoted the following output:

switch: dir flash:

Directory of flash:/

2    -rwx  12753152                 c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin

However, according to the Cisco download site, the size of this particular IOS image should be different:

Description:IP SERVICES
Release:12.2.55-SE6
Release Date:01/Aug/2012
File Name:c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin
Min Memory:DRAM 128 MB Flash 16 MB
Size:12.16 MB (12752912 bytes)
MD5 Checksum:51b1e567f8e0bfe8c0892d321ba8e8df

It indeed appears that the image in your FLASH is not genuine. Make sure that your COM port uses 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity, and - important! - no flow control, i.e. no software (XON/XOFF), no hardware.

I suggest using TeraTerm to download the IOS to the FLASH via XMODEM. So far, it has worked nicely for me.

Best regards,

Peter

Hi,

Did you try deleting the old image first before loading a new one?

What model 3560 do you have?

what IOS are you trying yo load?

Can you post the output of "dir" or "dir flash:"?

HTH

Heya RezaSharifi,

I did indeed delete the image before loading the new one.  I have the WS-C3560-24PS-S model.

I tried loading the following images:

c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-25.SEE.bin

c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin

c3560-ipservices-mz.122-25.SEC2.bin

switch: dir

List of filesystems currently registered:

               flash[0]: (read-write)

              xmodem[1]: (read-only)

                null[2]: (read-write)

                  bs[3]: (read-only)

switch: dir flash:

Directory of flash:/

2    -rwx  12753152                 c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin

3244544 bytes available (12754432 bytes used)

Also, I wanted to add that I tried booting the image off flash and I got the following error which I found odd.

switch: boot

Loading "c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin"...c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin: no such device

Error loading "c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-55.SE6.bin"

Interrupt within 5 seconds to abort boot process.

Boot process failed...

That's what I've been using, is Xmodem.  I think that's really the only way for me to load the IOS at this point.

Any thoughts gents?  I really can't believe this switch is truly bricked from simply trying to upgrade the IOS.

Looks like I'm dead in the water.
