I had to go beyond 16 vlans on 2 X 3550-12 switches running HSRP. I'm started sharing group numbers and was ok adding 3 more HSRP vlans but when I tried to enter the 20th vlan I get a message "MAX NUMBER OF HSRP MAC addresses exceeded". I need 24 vlans using HSRP! HELP!

A single HSRP group address can be used only on 16 VLAN interfaces. That's the limitation of the 3550 switch. See the link below for more info. Can you create a different group (#) for the other 8 VLANs.

Hi Sundar...My first 16 groups each had their own group number using HSRP, then for my next 3 VLANS I started sharing the group numbers, this got me past the 16 HSRP vlan limit but when I hit my 20th VLAN I received the out of HSRP mac address error. So I have groups 13 to 28 with 1 HSRP vlan assigned to each group with the exception of the last group 28 to which I assigned another 3 HSRP vlans to it. When I tried to add the 5th HSRP vlan to it I received the out of MAC address error.

Hi Friend,
There is also a limitation in the way you can implement the group with vlan interfaces.
Just read this link and you will be good to go
