maximum data size which switch/router can recieve?

hi all,

I'm posting for question about mtu issue.

almost ethernet(fast/gigia/ten-giga...) uses 1500bytes of mtu.

as you know, mtu is a maxium size which router/switch can send for outgoing direction.(or onward) 

so mtu is not a thing about receiving data size.

then how much data(bytes) router can receive?

whether data size is 1500 or bigger, router can receive it?

for example,

router has fast-ethernet 0/1 and 0/2

both interface mtu size=1500bytes

when 2000bytes data comes from 0/1 and outgoing 0/2

in my mind, router would receive the data well because of mtu=1500bytes has not a releation with receving data size. 

after this, router would send the data with 2 packets(1500byte+500byte) to outgoing interface(0/2)

is my guess right?

if it's right, how much bytes router can receive? jumbo size(about 9000bytes)? or something else?
