Hello,

I have a Catalyst 6500_SUP32 with the following modules:

- When I try to send the same multicast stream between 2 ports (ports giga 2/13 and giga 2/14) with exactly the same configuration on a 6500 with the following modules:
6500_SUP720#show module
Mod Ports Card Type                              Model              Serial No.
--- ----- -------------------------------------- ------------------ -----------

  2   24  CEF720 24 port 1000mb SFP              WS-X6724-SFP       iiiiiiiiiii
  5    2  Supervisor Engine 720 (Active)         WS-SUP720-3B       jjjjjjjjjjj

it works fine.

- The same for a 3750, it works without the need of adding new configuration commands.

- The questions are:

1. Why this does not work on WS-SUP32-GE-3B? (Architecture of this module???)
2. Do I need to configure some feature to get it works? I will configure the "ip igmp snooping querier" in the next test, but, Do I need add some more command?

Many thanks in advance.

Benito M.

Hi Benito,

Could please paste the output of "show ip igmp snooping vlan 200" from the SUP 32 side.

If IGMP snooping or PIM is not enabled on the vlan, you might see this behaviour. You can either enable " ip pim sparse-dense mode" under the vlan 200 interface or just configure the " ip IGMP snooping querier " on the switch to work this out. You dont need any other config command as such.

Hi Amit,

Thank you very much for your fast answer.

I have no configured an interface vlan 200 (SVI), I only have a vlan 200 (level 2).

Hi Benoit,

Sorry, I thought that you had the SVI configured for the vlan. If its a pure L2 network, then " IGMP querier" the solution for you.

Please see the problem  and the solution that you are facing below.

Hi Amit,

Thank you very much for your answer.

I think that "igmp snooping querier" must be enabled in Global configuration mode, but in this device is not possible:

6500_SUP32(config)#ip igmp ?
immediate-leave  Leave groups immediately without sending last member query, use for one host network only
  limit            IGMP limit
snooping         Global IGMP Snooping enable for Catalyst Vlans
  ssm-map          SSM mapping commands
  vrf              Select VPN Routing/Forwarding instance

6500_SUP32(config)#ip igmp snooping ?
  cgmp                  configure CGMP option
l2-entry-limit        limit on the l2 entry that can be installed by IGMP snooping
  limit                 Configure IGMP Snooping limits
  source-only-learning  source-only gce entries

Neither "igmp snooping querier" nor "static mrouter port" can be enabled, so, I think I must configure a SVI for vlan 200, asign an IP and configure "ip pim sparse-dense-mode" on it...do you agree?

Moreover, these features are needed when we have 2 or more switches, but I only have one switch, I don´t understand because of this...(Architecture of Sup32???)

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Benito.

Benoit,

Here is what I want you to try :

1. Try enabling IGMP snooping globally. ip igmp snooping

2.  Create a VLAN interface for vlan 200 and then configure IGMP snooping querier under that. Except for the global enable command, all IGMP snooping commands are supported only on VLAN interfaces. You need to configure an IP address for this vlan, it doesnot work without the IP address.

3. If it doesnot work then try configuring the IP PIM sprse-dense mode under the SVI.

4. You can also try configuring static multicast receive if the above two steps doesnot work.

Please see the link below to understand the IGMP snooping on the Cat6500.

HTH,

Hi Amit,

Thank you very much for your answer.

In the second option, must I configure an IP on the same Network that the source address of the multicast flow?

Regards,

Benito.

Yes, IP address on the VLAN 200 interface in your case.

-as

Hi Amit,

I have just done the tests.

1. I first did enable "ip igmp snooping": it didn´t work.

2. I did configure a SVI for vlan 200 with IP and mask. The configuration was:

interface Vlan200
ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
ip igmp snooping querier

end

but it didn´t work.

3. I did configure:

interface Vlan200
ip address x.x.x.x x.x.x.x
ip igmp snooping mrouter interface GigabitEthernet6/1
ip igmp snooping mrouter interface GigabitEthernet6/2
end

With this configuration, it works fine.

I don´t understand why we must configure an "mrouter" (I understand in case of ports located on different switches...), because those ports are in the same switch and in the same module... Could it be due to the Architecture of the SUP32?

Thank you very much for your help.

Regards,

Benito.

you need to configure this odd L3 interface due to architecture of 6500 switch and sup module. seems like a defect to me, but that's what TAC told me. There are workaround, such as enable IGMP on firewall interface if firewall has an L3 interface on this vlan. or enable IGMP on connected router. this will facilitate the IGMP snooping. here is a document that discuss IGMP among two catalyst switches. basically, i think of 6500 switchports as all min-switches in regard to setup of IGMP snooping,. in other words, you need to adhere to this document, thinking catalyst has a "switch" on each port in its fabric.
