Multicast issue

We have a weird issue that's been going on for a bit now. Basically some of our SIP phones don't broadcast pages through the speaker some of the time. Our Cisco UC system has an extension set for paging through both over head speakers and through a Informacast paging server the SIP phone speakers. The phones and the UC servers and Informacast server are on 1 of 3 VLANs. These 3 VLANs are configured with PIM sparse-dense mode on a Cisco4500X VSS cluster from there the phones connect to C3650's L2.

What we've been noticing is that when a page is sent, it would go across most phones expect a couple phones. The issue could occur on 1 phone and then later without any intervention it would be fine and have the page come through the speaker. Today during some tests they were all working that we could get to 15-20 phones, a person who's phone was working came over to let us know that it was know working now. Out of the phones that we tested 1 wasn't working until we reset it. We tested it a couple more time and it responded properly, Shortly after we left, the person who had mentioned their phone was working, reported that the paging wasn't working. Something that we did notice that occurred on the phones having the issue was when a page was announced the speaker and mute buttons lit up, just nothing came through the speaker even if the speaker volume was on full volume.

This system was working up end of December stably, In mid-December there were some patches made to the ESX servers the UC system is on. Then we've been getting these issue. I've been getting push back stating that these upgrades wouldn't have caused this issue and the Informacast are saying it's a network issue, but haven't really proved it. From what I can see the multicast routing is working as some of the phones are broadcasting the page through the phone speaker.

Since this is an intermittent issue, we're still doing some testing.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

John

What model phones, and what version of firmware have you got running on them?

Anything interesting appearing in the switch logs when this happens?

Nothing in the logs on the access switch or the distribution switch. Phones are 7841s and 7821s firmware is Phone Configuration sip78xx.10-2-1-12SR1-4.

Thanks

John

We just did some some testing when I did a show ip igmp snoop group, I saw most of the ports with phones attached show up. However, the person who was doing the tests mentioned it seemed like no phones where working when it failed. He's going to upgrade the firmware on the phones then do more intensive testing off hours.

We upgraded the firmware on most of the phones, they worked fine this morning when others with the older firmware had issues. We'll be upgrading the rest over the weekend.
