hi, Cisco Experts:

I am not a network expert, so I need advices:

Example:

Customer has X 2 N5596, X 2 N2224TP and X 2 CAT6509E & others like UCS 5108 Chassis, etc.

Q1.

Customer has X 2 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-A to CAT6509E-A.

Customer has X 2 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-B to CAT6509E-B.

CAT6509E is in Independence Mode (NO VSS)

N5596UP is in vPC Mode

Customer wants to do Ethernt Uplink Functional Test so they told me they wanted to PLUG OUT both of the X 2 Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-A or N5596-B. What will be the outcome with regard to the following?

CAT6509E is their L3 whereby customer clients can access the application hosted in Bare-Metal UCS Blades? They will issue ping test from their notebooks to one of the L3 IP.

Will the ping break?

Will the following connection make a difference at all?

Customer has X 1 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-A to CAT6509E-A, follows by another 

X 1 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-A to CAT6509E-B,

Customer has X 1 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-B to CAT6509E-B, follows by another 

X 1 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596-B to CAT6509E-A,

CAT6509E is in Independence Mode (NO VSS)

N5596UP is in vPC Mode

Q3.

What is Cisco's recommended Best Practices ASSUMING customer is NOT RUNNING VSS in their X 2 CAT6509E in terms of Physical Connectivity & Redundancy in this case?

So each 6500 has connections to both Nexus switches using a vPC connection ?

The ping that is being tested, can you describe exxactly the path it takes from the client laptop to the destination IP address ie which devices it has to go through to get from source to destination.

Also for the source IP and the destination IP can you indicate which devices act as the L3 gateway for these IPs ie. do the 6500s route for all the vlans or are there other devices routing for some vlans.

If the 6500s are routing for the vlans how are the interconnected ie. is it via a L2 trunk and are they running HSRP for example.

Let simplify the scenario.

What will happen if I unplug both of the 2 10G Ethernet Uplinks from N5596UP (Running vPC Mode) to CAT6509E (Running in Independent Mode i.e. NO VSS)?

N5K-A -----|------  CAT6509E-A

N5K-B -----|------- CAT6509E-A        VPC on the Nexus 5000 end and Port-Channel on the 65000 end

N5K-A -----|------  CAT6509E-B

N5K-B -----|------- CAT6509E-B         VPC on the Nexus 5000 end and Port-Channel on the 65000 end

Q.

Will N5596UP and CAT6509E maintain the state information? When customer unplugged 1 of the 2 Ethernet Uplinks, everything was OK. Now, they are asking me can they UNPLUG both of the X 2 Ethernet Uplinks from N5596UP?

I actually asked customer to ping from Mgmt Network Segment to a UCS Blade in another segment accessible ONLY via CAT6509E?

Firstly i should say i am answering based on what should happen but there is no way of me knowing exactly what configuration is on each switch so unexpected consequences can always arise.

So my understanding is you want to unplug the uplinks from one Nexus switch ie. not an uplink from each Nexus. Is that correct ?

If so as long as the device you are pinging is uplinked to both Nexus switches there should still be a path to that device and the remaining switch should still be able to forward packets to the destination IP.
