NAT and DHCP

Hello

My question is within a normal function able network, Will a server with public IP address be able to access networks past ISP if there isnt a DHCP server or NAT configuration?

To be more clear can a public IP address be forwarded out of network without needing to be translated and go through DHCP or NAT

Hi Pezhman,

Yes, you can assign a public IP directly on the PC and use it without DHCP or NAT given that,

- The IP you are using on the PC is coming from a Subnet that is routed back on to your home-router by your ISP. ( thus ISP should have provided you with a routed subnet  so you can pick one IP from that subnet for your server)

You can't just use any IP on the PC, because it will not be routed back OR it will get dropped at the first ISP router it finds along the way.

Yes, NAT actually means converting to THAT public IP. So if you are given a public IP by your ISP, you can simply assign it to your PC and give it the default gateway. Your internet will work 100% fine
