Hi, I am trying to setup a network and I need some help on this.
I have the IP 148.197.32.0/25
I am using windows as a host and VM Server on top.
I need for a 100 users:
1 DB server accessed by 28 users
1 MailServer
1 WebServer
The DB must be accessed only by the 28 users and the rest 72 must access the MailServer
Everyone connect to the intranet and the Web
I can't figure out how many networks I need and how to configure the Vswitches.
I hope you can please help. This is a lab I have been doing and I cant get it right

Mike,
I would suggest always do subnetting with self rather depending on online subne calculator because all are been programmed for some default settings which you cannot change so that can be one of the issue it has shown you wrong details.
so as network administrator i would suggest always do subnetting by your self.
I would also request if your thread is cleared and helped to achieve your task, kindly rate the valuable post and mark this thread as resolved so that others can get benifitted.

Hello Mike,
The number of useable IPs for /25 is 126, therefore you will need the 148.197.32.0/25 just for your users. Then you also need a small subnet like a /28 or /27 for your DB server, mail server, etc.... if you can put all your severs in the same subnet.
So, one subnet is not enough, you need at least two.

Hi Mike,
You have a subnet 148.197.32.0/25 which have ip address range of 148.197.32.1 to 148.197.32.126 and as per your requirement
1 DB server accessed by 28 users
1 MailServer
1 WebServer
and rest 72 users need only access for mail server,so what i would suggest you to create vlans on switch with subnet one for DB server and other for mail servers.
DB server subnet needs only 28 users you can use 148.197.32.96/27 , 148.197.32.97 to 148.197.32.126.
and for others you can use 148.197.32.0/26 , 148.197.32.1 to 148.197.32.62 and 148.197.32.64/28 , 148.197.32.65 to 148.197.32.78
Hope that helps out your query !!

Yeah thanks for that. I have one last question though.
Where do I assign the IPs.
I will make 3 Vlans on the switch. And I will have the server and 3 VMs inside.
1 subnet for each vlan
What about the physical NIC and the virtual switches on the VMs? That is were it gets confusing.

--- Switch-----router------server ----

Sth like that?

Hi Mike,
As per the setup if switch is L3 then create vlans and assign ip address to L3 vlan and assign gateway to L3 interfcae of the vlan to host and as far in VM setup you need to create virtual loopback and assign ip address to host and gateway.

--- Switch-----router------server ----

Hope that clear out your query !!

I don.t understand the virtual loopback and gateway. Can I do that in the VM?

Mike,
You don't needs loopback in your VM. They are just layer-2 devices. All you have to do is configure VLANs in your VM.

Ok this is getting confusing. Let me try and recap
L3 switch with VLAN 10 and VLAN 20
server with DB VM on VLAN 10 [28 users]
MailServer VM on VLAN 20 [72 users]
WebServer [bridged] accessed by all ?what IP?
Any luck?

Mike,
Ok Just see how to achive ...

L3 switch with VLAN 10 and VLAN 20

Create two vlan on L3 switch and create two SVI for vlans and assign them gateway for vlan users and connect the port server and mailserver port on L3 switch vlan port.
Ip address subnet been already shared in previous post.

Thanks guys this helped allot. I have a question though.
When I used vlsm for the 148.197.32.0/25 I came up with:
148.197.32.0 - .32.127 /25
148.197.32.128 - .32.159/27
148.197.32.160 - 32.167/29
but when I used one of the online calculators it failed. How is that?
