I have a router and a switch that many of the commands dont seem to work on, or must be modified to work. I am not sure if there is a newer version of the ios that would make these commands work or if my router and switch would even support them. I have searched for this but have not come across a solution.
the following is the output of the show version on the router and the switch:

Then you'll be probably out of luck with that old router as the newest version on that device is 12.4.25d and to my knowledge in the CCNA IOS 15.0 is used. If you can't get your hands on a newer model (the 1841 is quite flexible) another option is to simulate the lab in GNS3 where you can use a Cisco 7200 with a 15.0 IOS.

If you are registered on Cisco you can use the Software Advisor:
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/Fusion/FusionHome.do
This is a great tool for finding what IOS is compatible with your hardware or finding a version of IOS with the commands you are looking for.

but will this allow the function of all commands? i cannot find anything about what commands work with what versions of ios.

Sorry you need the command lookup tool for that.

based on the features you need, you have to load a different feature set. In your post I didn't see what you want to configure, but if it is related to security, then the Enterprise-SW is not what you need. For that you could try the following "Advanced Security" image: c1700-advsecurityk9-mz.124-25d.bin

what is the minimum i can get by with on a switch?
05-29-2013 05:19 AM
The smallest switch I could think of for studying that stuff is the 8-port 2960. That one also runs IOS 15.0.
