Nexus 5k Upgrade vPC

Tobias Hilbert

Hi

In a vPC environnement cisco recommends to upgrade the primary switch first.

After issuing the command. "sh vpc role" i get the following output:

vPC Role status
----------------------------------------------------
vPC+ role                       : primary, operational secondary

Now I can't find any hints in the documentation if cisco is refering to the configured role or the operational role.

Could someone help me out here. :-)

thanks

Tobias

Hello Tobias,

The priority decides which device is the vPC primary and which is the vPC secondary. If the primary device were to reload, when the system comes back online and connectivity to the vPC secondary device (now the operational primary) is restored, the operational role of the secondary device (operational primary) will not change, to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

This behavior is achieved with a sticky-bit method, whereby the sticky information is not saved in the startup configuration, thus making the device that is up and running win over the reloaded device. Hence, the vPC primary becomes the vPC operational secondary.

If cisco say primary switch , That woudl refer to operatioanl role in vPC as that device is primary in that domain.

Hope it Helps..

you should be gettking the below either primary por secondary , have you got a vpc domain setup?

7k1a# sh vpc role

vPC Role status
----------------------------------------------------
vPC role                        : primary
vPC system-mac                  : 00:23:04:ee:be:64
vPC system-priority             : 150
vPC local system-mac            : d8:67:d9:06:29:41
vPC local role-priority         : 150

Hi

Sorry. I truncated the output. VPC is working fine. I just want to know witch switch to upgrade first.

Cisco talks about the "primary" switch. But I am not sure if configured primary or operational primary. The roles switched on my setup.

isew-nexus1f# sh vpc role

vPC Role status
----------------------------------------------------
vPC+ role                       : primary, operational secondary
Dual Active Detection Status    : 0
vPC system-mac                  : 00:23:04:ee:be:0c
vPC system-priority             : 32667
vPC local system-mac            : 00:2a:6a:f5:77:81
vPC local role-priority         : 32667

isew-nexus2f# sh vpc role

vPC Role status
----------------------------------------------------
vPC+ role                       : secondary, operational primary
Dual Active Detection Status    : 0
vPC system-mac                  : 00:23:04:ee:be:0c
vPC system-priority             : 32667
vPC local system-mac            : 00:2a:6a:fd:61:bc
vPC local role-priority         : 32667

thanks

Tobias

Looks like you have same priority on each switch so either can be primary thats why your getting that message operational instead of just standard primary or secondary , 1 needs to be less or more to have an full primary/secondary mode. If youn set one of them higher or less the putput should change to like the below extract

vPC role                        : primary
vPC system-mac                  : 00:23:04:ee:be:64
vPC system-priority             : 150
vPC local system-mac            : d8:67:d9:06:29:41
vPC local role-priority         : 150

vPC Role status
----------------------------------------------------
vPC role                        : secondary
vPC system-mac                  : 00:23:04:ee:be:64
vPC system-priority             : 150
vPC local system-mac            : d8:67:d9:05:7c:41
vPC local role-priority         : 200

Hi Mark

You are right. I should set explicit priorities to get a predictable behaviour.

thanks
