Bought a cisco 2600 to play with some, trying to access the command line interface but my laptop doesn't have a console port. I bought the usb to DB-9 adapter. I downloaded hyperterminal and set it to 9600 baud, 8 data bits and no parity. When I try connecting via tcp/ip it needs an address. Since I just got this it doesn't have an address. What do I need to do to access the command line interface?

Ok make sure you have the driver installed for the usb adapter
download putty just click serial as below , right click my computer-mange-device manager-ports(com &lpt) check what com port usb is using you will see it there an just set it in putty
That should get you going , putty has right serial settings by default

Thank you for the quick reply. I've tried using putty, the drivers are installed and com3 is the port being used, see attached. I set putty to com3, 9600 baud, 8 data bits and no parity. When I click the open button it makes a beep and nothing happens.
Thanks again for helping me figure this one out.

Yes those settings look good the only other things i could suggest is check the connection with another pc/laptop to rule out something strange with the nic, if its the same results most likely the console port is not functioning properly on the router and unfortunately if a console port is not working there's no way to really fix them other than send them back somewhere for repair
you could also set flow control to none in putty and when the black screen starts up try hit enter on it a few times see if it goes through
Try tera term as well incase something buggy with your adapter and putty

The original post talked about using hyperterm for tco/ip. But tcp/ip is based on using an IP address to access the device. If the original poster was trying to use the console port then they should have used the serial connection option in hyperterm.
I would have thought that terra term would have worked. But if there are issues with tera term then I wonder what would happen if the original poster goes back to hyperterm and uses the serial connection.

HI,
Make sure that your Flow Control is set to OFF. Not XON/XOFF. I have a problem with a Huawei switch where it didnt support flow control. Just my 2 cents
