NTP assoc error packets

Hi all,

I'm setting up a FreeBSD box to be used as NTP server within my network, which most of the time will be a stratum 2 NTP.

While I do have some sync problems between the FreeBSD box and the Stratum 1 (work in progress due to a firewall between them) I do see some strange errors on my routers and switches while issuing "show ntp assoc det".

Please see below in bold:

configured, ipv4, insane, invalid, unsynced, stratum 3

xmt time DF66EACB.8DC1D5AC (10:52:27.553 CEST Tue Oct 9 2018)

minpoll = 6, maxpoll = 10

While the assoc errors are incrementing, there is another odd thing: the reach value is most of the time 0 (0 the received updates are minimum - 377 constant updates). Now I'm not sure if this value is regarding the stratum 1 NTP or to my NTP (no firewall between these devices).

Ntp In packets : 41034
Ntp Out packets : 55569
Ntp bad version packets : 0
Ntp protocol error packets	: 0
Ntp Software Name : Cisco-ntpv4
Ntp Software Version	: Cisco-ntpv4-1.0
Ntp Software Vendor : CISCO
Ntp System Type : Cisco IOS

Can anyone explain how are the assoc errors generated?

Thanks,

N

HI,

You need to fix the issues between the FREEBSD server and the stratum 1 appliance. You switches and routers will not sync with a server that is not synced

You switch or router has sent ntp packets but has not received any successful/valid returns, hence the reach is zero. The switch/router is having issues with the packets from you server.

Thanks

John
