Out of Band and questions

Hi everyone, i am reading through the Implementing Cisco IP Switch Networks (Switch), i came across this statement "In this example, the core layer interconnects with a data center and edge distribution module to interconnect WAN, remote access, and the Internet. The network module operates out of band from the network but it is still a critical component."

1) What does out of band means from the network means from the above sentences?

2) What does in band and out of band means in network topology and to device ports? I kind of confuse as i read from the internet.

Out of band would usually means a separate physical connection from your data traffic which means if there is a problems you can access the device on a completely separate link from your live traffic.

They are usually cheap DSL links
