I am trying to get back into a cisco 4510 using the password recovery procedure. The instructions are easy to follow but the issue seems to be the inability to change the config register.
I perform the following:
>Ctrl + C
>At the rommon prompt, confreg 0x2142
>reset
The switch will reload but it will not bypass the autoboot.
Where am I going wrong? TIA

I am somewhat confused by your description of your issue. With config register set to 0x2142 it should do a normal boot of the usual software and not read the startup config. So you should end up with a running switch with the default config. I am not clear what you are describing when you say that it does not bypass the autoboot. Can you provide clarification?

After I change the confreg to 0x2142 and perform a reset. The switch boots up from the startup config. Then I get the 'authentication failed' message. That is the original issue I am trying to solve.

- Did you also try power cycle , instead of reset ?
