Hello,

I have here a Cisco 2924-XL Switch, witch I have optained from a cisco-partner.

But this switch is password protected.

The nice Cisco assistant has told me where i can find the procedure for password-reset.

I have followed the instruction and then restarted the switch.

But i can't access the switch, because there is still a password inside!

I can describe what i have done exactly, perhaps there is a mistake.

1.) connected to switch while pressing the MODE button.

2.) flash_init

3.) load_helper

4.) dir flash:

5.) rename flash:config.text flash:config.old

6.) boot

7.) n -> Return

8.) en

9.) rename flash:config.old flash:config.text

10.) copy flash:config.text system:running-config

11.) configure terminal

12.) no enable secret password

13.) enable password Cisco

14.) CTRG+Z

15.) Power-off Switch buy unplugging the dower cable.

I can't find the problem, but when I restart the switch, ther is still a password present.

What can I do to reset the password, perhaps there is a mistake ?

Thanks for you help.

Hello Roman,

after completing step 14, have you issued the ´wr mem´ command ? This will save the new password to memory, if you do not save the config, your changes are lost after you reboot the switch...

Hello,

i forgot to write 15.). Sure I have done this step too, exactly how it is writen in the Instruction. But it doesn't work anyway...

15.) write memory

16.) power-off the switch...

Is the "write memory" command enough to save the config to the file, or does he save it only to the memory ?

Is there an other possibility to reset the password ?

Normally that is enough to save it . The only thing i can think to check is the config register . Make sure it says 0Xf for the register. The other is question are you sure you are dealing with the enable password or are you getting stuck on the console or vty passwords ? You should change those to something you know while you are in there.

Try it again, by following the instructions you have you should be able to get into the switch, rename the conf as it says and then run the boot cmd.

sounds like your no follow the instrucitons exactly and missing a step.

Good luck.

There are two passwords, sounds like your changing the enable password but not the other. If you are sure you don't need to see the config on the switch you can always just delete the startup and running config, that should take you back to a switch with now config on it at all and then start from scratch.

Hello,

it is now working.

But ONLY if you DELETE the config.text in the FLASH directory...

And you can only delete it, if it is not called config.text so I had to rename it first and than I could delete it.

After this procedure I was able to start the switch WITHOUT password.

So the procedure whitch is proposed from cisco is wrong and don`t work.

Thanks anyway for your help, I am very happy, that it is now without password, even if I have to configure the switch new.

The config on the switch disappeared while following the below procedure, published here.

Step #9 errored out.

9.) rename flash:config.old flash:config.text

Switch#rename flash:cof nfig.old flash:config.text
Destination filename [config.text]?
%Error renaming flash:config.old to flash:config.text (No such file or directory)
Switch#copy config.old fconfig.old lconfig.old aconfig.old sconfig.old hconfig.old :config.old config.old system:running-config
Destination filename [running-config]?
%Error opening flash:config.old (No such file or directory)
Switch#sh int status

Is there anything else I can do?  I really need to view the config of the passworded switch.

Thanks
