Hi All
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between power combined and power redundant setting on the 9600 switches?
We have 2 sups, 2 x 48 port fiber and 1 copper card in the chassis, it also has 4 power supplies.
In each mode, what would the difference be to us? it is currently in combined mode (default) and I have noticed that it needs 2 of the 4 power supplies to run, would this change if we change to redundant mode?
cheers

Hi
I have already read that and it did not offer me any help.

this is best approach,
Redundant mode-Redundant mode uses one power supply as a primary power supply and the second power supply as a back-up. If the primary power supply fails, the second power supply immediately supports the switch without any disruption in the network. Both power supplies must be the same wattage. A single power supply must have enough power to support the switch.
what mode you recommend? Should we leave in combined or change to redundant?
depends on the PSU installed on the device
show module or inventory give more granular information.

carl,
According to the Cisco Power Calculator at https://cpc.cloudapps.cisco.com/cpc/ :
2xSup1, 2xC9600-LC-48S, 1xC9600-LC-48TX, 1x9606R Chassis is a maximum power budget of 2745W.
2xSup1, 2xC9600-LC-48YL, 1xC9600-LC-48TX, 1x9606R Chassis is a maximum power budget of 2885W.
In Redundant Mode with 4 Power supplies, the total power budget is 2 times the output numbers shown here :
Power supply output |
|
Therefore, if you are running 4 supplies at 200-240V, then your total budge for Redundant Mode is 4000W, which supports the highest possible power budget as shown in the Power Calculator.
If you are running 4 supplies at 100-120V, then your total budge would for Redundant Mode is 2100W, which is not enough to support the highest possible power budget as shown in the Power Calculator. Therefore, you would need Combined Mode.
Their is a slide and overview of the 9600 Power operation in the Cisco Live session at https://www.ciscolive.com/global/on-demand-library.html?search=9600#/session/1556555759694001057h (BRKARC-3010 - Cisco Catalyst 9600 Architecture).

Hi Scott
in our situation, what mode you recommend? Should we leave in combined or change to redundant?

Carl,
I always recommend redundant mode if possible. As you have already bought the 4 supplies, you might as well use them and provide full redundancy.
