Pruning VLANs off 3500s

we have about 45 VLANs on our network. We prune VLANs automatically( by configuring pruning) and from what I understand, if a switch trunk isn't manually pruned it will still carry instances of all VLANs. Some of our switches are old 3500XLs(only have about 10 left). They are always running with high CPU usage. Could manually pruning the VLANs off these switches bring the high CPU usage down? They are running anywhere from 80 to 95%.

Thanks, Pat.

That's very high CPU.

What's the uptime and what IOS version?

Leo,

uptime is 10 weeks, 5 days, 22 hours, 27 minutes

IOS (tm) C3500XL Software (C3500XL-C3H2S-M), Version 12.0(5)XW, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

When I reboot switches with high CPU they seem to go down for a while.

Wow.  That's a pretty old IOS.  I've never seen the "XW" in my life.

Can you try downloading the latest one, WC17, and give it a go?

I thought the 3500XL supported VTP pruning.

What's using your CPU?  Have you read:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps607/products_tech_note09186a0080094e78.shtml?

patrick, what processes are hogging the cpu?

can you do # sh proc cpu

The highest CPU at the moment is only 57% and the memory usage of the same device is 60% as reported by SolarWinds but it is the weekend. No processes stand out except for port status which is 11%.

Would like to see the output of following cammand during high CPU.

Show process cpu

Show process Mem

Clear the interface counters followed by Show interfaces | in up|drop|rate|packet and check if any port is ovewhelming the capacity.
