question related to VSS

Hi All,

when we configure VSS in the Core on 6500 swithces, we make port channel to make bundle the VSS together. what about the confguration on the Access swithces, whihc will be connecting both the Chassis in VSS. do we need the uplinks from access swithces to be configured as port channel bundles? or we can configure the uplink ports as just dot.1q trunks link?

The below config is correct or not? required the Port-channel 1 between the core and the access or not???

On Core

interface Port-channel1

switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

Hello Sunny,

you should configure STP parameters likely  making the VSS the root bridge in any case for best practice

Hope to help

Hello Sunny,

you can use a port channel between the access layer switch and the VSS device pair and this is one of the advantages of VSS as it allows to use both uplink links using a multi chassis etherchannel.

You are not obliged to do it. it is usually done as it provides advantages without using the port channel one uplink link would be put  in STP alternate state (blocking actually) by STP protocol

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Dear Giuseppe,

So in that case we need to configure STP parameteres correctly in the VSS Core Device right?

Sunny

thanks a lot giusee...

Hi Giuasee,

One more thing to rectify. what about the STP configuration on VSS?

when we will configure the STP Parametrs? before making VSS or after makig the VSS as one switch?

I will make the VSS swith as the spanning-tree vlan <1-4096> root primary for all my vlan, then what are the common things we may need to configure on the VSS switch?

appreciate your immedaite response

Thanks & Regards

Sunny

Hi Sunny,

It shouldnt matter.

Spanning tree should be running in VSS and NON-VSS so just configure it as normal and then once your running VSS sinply just check spanning tree is running as expected.

If you use "MEC's to all your switches ( port-channels ) then spanning tree shouldnt cause any issues anyway. But its handy to have enabled just incase you get loops for some reason.

Hi,

You should make any changes after VSS is configured, if not once VSS is configured, it will override the old config.
