Hi,

I have a potential client with ProCurve Switch 1800-24G (J9028A) who is having switching performance issues in a heavily used media streaming application.

The HP has these performance characteristics

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/sm/WF06b/12136296-12136298-12136298-12136298-12627666-12627718-77904485.html

Which Cisco switch would run circles around these HPs w/o breaking the bank and would provide media video streaming support?

Thanks.

I've played with the 1800 briefly.  If you want a "fanless" 24 port switch, there's nothing like this.

However, the nearest thing to the 1800 would be the 2960 series switches.  For 24 ports 1G, then I'd recommend the 2960S-24TS (24 port 1 Gb, non-PoE, 4 SFP port for uplinks).  Take note that you can't use HP SFP in Cisco switches.

Fanless was likely a requirement for this environment.

Cisco has a number of fanless switches but they are limited to up to 8 ports only.   The 2960 series switches' fans are very good (unlike the 2950).  As long as the environment is kept clean, i.  e.  no dusts to stick to the impellers, the fans should operate quietly.

Incompatiable SFP means more $$.

Yes and no.  But I'm not going to comment on this.

You can get GLC-SX-MM cheaper using outside sources such as e-bay.

would the 3750-X outperform the 2960S ?

Errrr ... Could be an overkill.  When the 3750X powers up, it sounds like a 737 taking off.    Normal operation, the 3750X isn't as quiet as the 2960S.  Good part about it is that you can remove the fans (for replacement purposes) of the 3750X.

I would get the 3750X if, for example, I want to have power redundancy and connected to servers.  If it's desktop doing video then 2960S would be sufficient.

would it be perhaps more appropriate for this application ?

it is a bunch of servers...see diagram and problem description

it is a bunch of servers

In that case, 3750X would suit fine if you intend to stack two or more.  Otherwise, you can use 3560X if you only use a single switch.
