Replacing F1 card with F2E card on Nexus 7K

Hi Guys,

I am planning to replace an old F1 card with the new F2E card in our two Nexus 7004 chassises.

I have two N7Ks, with no vpc domain being involved in vdc that has F1 card attached. So I am planning just to do following:

1. preserve the config

2. shutdown the F1 module on HSRP inactive switch

3. remove F1 from vdc configuration

4. replace the F1 with F2E physically

5. wait until F2E comes up

6. attach it to VDC configuration

7. paste the interface configuration back ( as it should  be gone supposedly when I remove F1 from vdc)

8. bring HSRP priority to the new line card

9. Do the 1 to 8 to the second switch

I assume there should be no outage as I move HSRP priorities in between the switches.

Wondering if there is any gotchas that I need to be aware of, as everything seems to me pretty straight forward as there is no vpc domain on the switches.

You'll need to upgrade the chassis before installing the F2s. And youll need to upgrade
both the system and kickstart images.

AS you can see the these modules only supported from release 6.1.2 or later)

2.
Since you are running a single SUP chassis youll need to follow the traditional upgrade
procedure, which can be found here:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/sw/5_x/nx-os/upgrade/guide/b_Cisco_Nex
us_7000_Series_NX-OS_Software_Upgrade_and_Downgrade_Guide__Release_5.x_chapter_00.html#con
_314241

3.
Once the chassis is upgraded youll need to create a special VDC for the F2 modules. F2
modules require an isolated VDC. Here are the instructions for creating it:
a.
config t
b.
vdc <name>
c.
limit-resource module-type f2
d.
allocate interface Ethernet <port range>
e.
exit
f.
switchto vdc <name>

4.
The F2s will not inherit the config from the old F1/M1 modules, so youll need to
configure them once their installed.

5.
You should be fine from a licensing standpoint, unless you want to do FCoE.

6.
You may also want to take a look at the following flow chart to verify that you have
enough memory to perform he upgrade:

placing.html#wp1271902
