Replacing faulty 4507 Supervisor

I searched and couldn't find definitive steps/answer:

My 4507 is showing a faulty supervisor:

Chassis Type : WS-C4507R

Power consumed by backplane : 40 Watts

Mod Ports Card Type Model Serial No.

Can i just take a WS-X4013+ from an old/spare 4507 and replace the faulty supervisor here? Same model, OS etc, etc. Is it just hot swappable?

Ok in the current 4507 i looked @ the bootflashes:

4507_Data#show bootflash:

So i tried copying the Post failed.txt file to read it:

4507_Data#copy slavebootflash: tftp:
Source filename []? post-2020.11.21.02.06.22-failed.txt
Address or name of remote host []? 172.24.10.102
Destination filename [post-2020.11.21.02.06.22-failed.txt]?
.....
%Error opening tftp://172.24.10.102/post-2020.11.21.02.06.22-failed.txt (Timed out)

4507_Data#copy slavebootflash: tftp:
Source filename [post-2020.11.21.02.06.22-failed.txt]?
Address or name of remote host []? 172.24.10.102

.....
%Error opening tftp://172.24.10.102/post.txt (Timed out)

Both attempts created the destination file in the tftp directory but the file was 0 bytes and empty. How can i get this Post failed file to read it?

As long as both Sups are configured as SSO (Which I see they are), all you have to do is take out the redundant sup in blade 2 and put the other one in. As long as the other sup has the same exact IOS as the faulty one and exact hardware, you should be fine. The sups and blades are all hot-swappable and the config from the primary sup will be synced into the backup once the new sup is inserted.

Verify with "sh redun" command

Hello @maloyal ,

remember that the second supervisory is not operational this is the reason why you are not able to retrieve and upload files via TFTP.

in some cases the slavebootflash: is not accessible at all when a sup is faulty. Here you can list the files from the master supervisor.

all you can do is to remove the faulty supervisor and insert the other one but only if it is running the same exact IOS image.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Should i be able to use the console port of the faulty supe? I plugged in and got nothing.

It depends on what has gone wrong with the sup. You may not see anything because the hardware has gone bad. If it was a software crash, you could possibly reseat the sup and see something on the console. But if you are going to reseat the bad sup you may as well put a good working one in there and replace it.

Since Active / Standby Sup, you can download to Active supervisor with different name and copy to slave supervisor flash once it copied to active one.

or get flash disk to copy easy way doing.

you should be able to either reseat or deny and approve power to the faulty Sup.  You should see it reboot via console, and possible show you what is wrong.  If you do not see console activity on the faulty Sup while reseating it and with a known good console terminal (test the console cable and adapter on the good sup), it's likely damaged beyond repair.  The replacement Sup may not come directly to SSO HA, without manual firmware patching.  If you get this gray market, not advising or condoning, but understand that's one of the last vehicle to buy 4500 sups at this point, I would update the ROMMON and IOS even if it is on the right code!  I wouldn't trust anything off gray market to have come without a rootkit installed, regardless of stars on the sellers profile....

The replacement sup is from an identical 4507 that we purchased @ the same time as the one in production, it was just decommissioned bout a year ago.

I put in the replacement supe and the redundancy mode now shows RPR and Standby Cold. Do i just set mode to SSO?

Yes, as follows:

Switch> enable
Switch# configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Switch(config)# redundancy
Switch(config-red)# mode sso
Switch(config-red)# end
Switch# show redundancy

Ok ran it, said it would reset the Standby and after it booted back up...still shows RPR Mode and STANDBY COLD.

You can try, but shouldn't be required.  Do you now see redundancy mode SSO when doing a "show redundancy" command? You should go to standby hot.  Try doing a write mem, and then reboot if needed.
