Hi i just wanted to confirm that a routers main job is to forward ip packets. However a router can only pass an ip packet to an ip address that is directly connected making it look like ur using a series of gateways. A static route and a dynamic is used so the router can match the destination IP that belongs to other subnets. But by default a router can only match a Destination Ip that belongs to it's own Subnet.

Hello Ericka,

you are right about a router's main job, which is to forward traffic. Without any routing protocols or static routes configured, it can only forward packets to directly connected networks. Static routes and dynamic routing protocols are used to forward traffic to other destinations.
