is it safe to run these commands on a production switch just to see if it can use a 3rd party sfp module
service unsupported-transceiver
no errdisable detect cause gbic-invalid

yes you can issue these commands not seen any side effect on the production network.

its a cisco nexus 7000 with version 6.2.20
maybe that command just doesnt run on this version?

the command not global lelvel try interface level like example :
BB-Nexus(config)# Interface ethernet1/9
BB-Nexus(config-if)# service unsupported-transceiver

Yes, but you sometimes you get what you pay for. There's a SFP vendor starting with F and ending in ..ore that I have likely spend more in trips to repair and cost of outages than savings.... If everyone else cost 10x more +, there's a reason, i.e. QA/QC. Weigh the risks and accept the SLA uptime/downtime results your business and carrier can afford. Good luck.
