Sharing of bandwidth

Hi Experts,

I am using a 6509 sup720 engine. I am thinking of getting 2 customers, 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2, to share a 20mbps bandwidth. I do an ACL for each IP, a class map that matches these 2 ACL and a policy map for the created class map. In the policy map, i do a police 20000000, conform action transmit and exceed action drop.

Is this how you share bandwidth for my scenario?

Thank you.

Depends on "how" you want to "share" bandwidth.
What you've described appears to just set a maximum limit for your two networks to use. However, assuming your service provider is limiting bandwidth to 20 Mbps, you only redoing what they should already be doing.
Hosts will automatically "share" bandwidth, policies, though, allow you to set limits and/or guarantees on "sharing" bandwidth. For example you might have a policy that limits each of your two networks to 10 Mbps. Or you might have a policy that guarantees a minimum of 50% of the bandwidth to each of your two networks.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for sharing. My uplink is 100mbps. My idea for this lab is to actually share 50mbps between 2 customers.

What will you advise me to do?

Thanks

If you're just trying to "simulate" a link of 50 Mbps, policing all traffic to 50 Mbps somewhat simulates that although you may want to increase Bc.
Keep in mind, the 6500 with sup 720 only has basic QoS to support LAN needs. For example, on most routers, often better than a policer would be to use a shaper, but that's not built-in feature of a sup720.
