Significance of TTL

Hello,

I have a small doubt that too about the basic of networking it?s not related to Cisco products directly. When so ever we try a PING from a Windows computer we get a TTL value. AFAIU TTL value is going to be decremented on ever layer three hop. When I am trying to ping a FQDN I am getting a TTL value as 55, does that mean it have crossed 255-55 hops. If so the trace route shouldn?t be completed in the 13th Hops.

Am I missing something?please correct?

Thank you,

Deepak

Hi,

it depends on the initial TTL value. Some operating systems choose 64 some 128 some 255 for the normal TTL value. So you might just have seen 64-55= 9 hops.
