Hi
a simple question, please advice me if I have 500 equipment, and I want a monitoring server use ether snmp/cdp to monitoring systems,
which one will be better, and cause less perfermence issue, and less traffic issue.
Any comments will be appreciated

Hi Julxu,
I think you can use cacti with snmp for network information polling. Even you can monitor individual devices as well.
Here is one example from our network.

thanks for reply.
I have a software, and it support both snmp and cdp. since we are heavy user for cisco catalyt switches, on both layer2 and layer3.
I would like to know, which protocal will make less load on local switch, speciallycat6500.

Hi Julie,
Looks like Snmp is recommended over cdp
1 Disable CDP on ports that connect to partner companies through an extranet, or to nodes in the network that have no need for data provided by CDP. The data provided by CDP could prove useful to a malicious user.
2 Use SNMPv3 with MD5 authentication and DES encryption
