Stack console not working untill 'network connectivity'

Dear all,

I have a strange issue I can't clarify, I have build an Catalyst 3850 switch stack, with 3 3850-24P and 1 3850-12S switches.

Switch Ports Model              SW Version        SW Image              Mode
------ ----- -----              ----------        ----------            ----
     1 32    WS-C3850-24P       03.07.04E         cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL
     2 32    WS-C3850-24P       03.07.04E         cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL
*    3 32    WS-C3850-24P       03.07.04E         cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL
     4 20    WS-C3850-12S       03.07.04E         cat3k_caa-universalk9 INSTALL

This stack has been connected to our APIC-EM test server, due to some tests I'm running currently. After a earlier provisoning, I have fully wiped the configuration on the stack and reloaded the machines.  (The device is 100% empty, issued the following: delete vlan.dat, delete *.cer on both nvram and stby-nvram, deleted the PnP profile and did a write erase).

After the wipe and reload I directly deleted the network cable and followed the progress through the console port of the upper switch, at some point at the boot progress my console connection gets lost, there is no output from the switch anymore.

The output on the console port:

Booting...
Interface GE 0 link down***ERROR: PHY link is down

Aug 11 08:48:37 %STACKMGR-1-STACK_LINK_CHANGE: Stack port 1 on switch 1 is up
#####

As you can see the console output stops at ####. To be sure the whole stack booted up correctly, I have waited for 15 minutes and selected the 'Stack' mode on the front of the switch. All of the switches respond correctly and show them all four as members of the stack.

As I still had no console connectivity, I have tried the other three console ports and on none I had any output nor my input was received.

To find out why this issue occured, I connected my stack to my core-switch which supplies the connectivity to my APIC-EM server and after a few seconds I had the welcome message on the console: localhost console is now available

When looking into the running configuration, there is no reference to the APIC-EM server or whatsoever. Maybe I have find a strange bug for this specific version, but I haven't found any related bug/ticket so far.

Anyone known with this strange behavior?

With kind regards,

Maarten Brok
