Stacking and supervisor function on 9404R

Dear Community,

Kindly ask,

1. what is the function of supervisor itself?

2. how can I stack the 9404R is using supervisor?

if yes, which type is suitable for stacking where it place as Core (back bone) switch?

Thank you for your kind attention and suggestion

Hi,

Think of the supervisor as the brain of the switch for everything. Here is the datasheet to review.

Also, you can use StackWise virtual if you have multiple chassis with one sup in each chassis.

Hi @Reza Sharifi

Thank you for your kind answer

is there any method for stacking besides stackwise for example LACP (port channel)?

if yes, can LACP be used on 9404R without any additional license just in case I use Supervisor C9400-SUP-1?

Hi,

Stacking is supported on different models; like the 3850s, 3650, 9300, etc. The 9400 support StackWise Virtual. This technology is very similar to VSS on the 6500 and 6700 series. And yes, LACP should be supported with whatever license that comes with the switch/sup.

"show license" or "show version" should show you the license level your sup has.

Hello @febryoponcosulistyo ,

from the link provided by Reza the following restrictions apply:

  • The feature requires a special, additional, C9400-SUP-UPG-LIC= license with Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series Supervisor 1 Module (C9400-SUP-1).

  • Cisco StackWise Virtual configuration commands will be recognised only on a switch running Network Advantage license. The configuration commands will not be recognised on a Network Essentials license.

So it looks like you need an additional license on C9400-SUP-1 and you need Network Advantage license at software level IOS XE.

the SVL links have to be taken from the supervisor itself.   Also DAD links using fast hellos need to use ports on supervisors.

It is similar to C6500 VSS with more constraints.

note: only two devices can be put in the SVL like in the VSS, stacks can have more then 2 members

Hope to help

Giuseppe
