Stackwise Virtual Design Question

Hello all,

We plan to build SVL connection using 10GBASE-LR between two buildings at 4km intervals.

Following are SVL connections:

#1 Switch                                                 #2 Switch

C9500-16X-A                                          C9500-16X-A

SFP-10G-LR ---- SMF(4km cable) ---- SFP-10G-LR

SFP-10G-LR ---- SMF(4km cable) ---- SFP-10G-LR

SFP-10G-LR ---- SMF(4km cable) ---- SFP-10G-LR

Is it possible to build SVL connections at 4km intervals?

Thank you,

Hi,

There is no distance limitation. As long as you have the right optics, you can one km, 4km or 20km, etc..

I don't know, but virtual switch distance limitations, if any, came up in another thread. In that thread, I noted there might be some minimum latency requirement for virtual switch, by if there is, I think it likely 4km would meet such.

Reza, you're sure even 20,000+ km (yes opposing sides of earth) would be okay?

Thank you very much for your help.

Understood,I will build the SVL connections using 10GBASE-LR.

Joe,

I don't know if I have seen a 10Gig SFP+ that support 20k km. Table-1 shows the max is 80km.

Reza

Yea, normal max is about 80km for a fiber link, however I have in mind a WAN cloud providing a logical L2 p2p. For such, you could have a connection half way around the world.

I understand that the VSL connection is the ethernet connection.

Therefore, cable distance(limitation) depends on the transceiver.

Cable distance    SFP                  Cable type

400m                  SFP-10G-SR    MMF

10km                  SFP-10G-LR     SMF

40km                  SFP-10G-ER     SMF

I have come to a conclusion that we build the SVL connection at distance of 4km using 10GBASE-LR SFP.

"Therefore, cable distance(limitation) depends on the transceiver."

Correct, if you're using those optics on a dedicated fiber link. However, again, if using a provider cloud, you might have a L2 connection much, much longer distance (even with SR optics). Also, BTW, ZX or DWDM, I believe, will get you to 80 km on a single fiber.

Thank you very much for your help.

I will build the VSL connection at distance of 4km using L1 connection.
